Hour-by-hour forecast as gusts of winds expected to top 45mph as Storm Bella hits Northumberland

A Met Office yellow weather warning remains in place over the Boxing Day weekend with strong gales expected to worsen in Northumberland this evening.

The weather warning, which is in place for parts of Northumberland, comes into force at 3pm on Saturday, December 26, until 12pm on Sunday, 27, as Storm Bella hits most of England and Wales.

Forecasters estimate that gusts of wind could hit 46mph in the county with heavy rain expected on Saturday evening and into the early hours of Sunday morning.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: “The strong south-westerly winds will develop across parts of northern England and the far south of Scotland on Saturday afternoon, before transferring south-eastwards across the rest of England and Wales into Sunday morning, clearing by early Sunday afternoon.”

It follows calm conditions and sunshine for much of the North East on Christmas Day.

In Northumberland the rain is expected to start at around 6pm and last until the early hours of Sunday morning.

Strong winds are expected to ease with sunny spells forecast throughout Sunday.

Deputy Chief Meteorologist Tony Wardle, said: “Very strong winds will impact much of England and Wales, with particularly strong gusts on south west facing coasts.

“Heavy rain will also move in from the north, with heavy downpours through the afternoon in Scotland and Northern Ireland moving south across England and Wales overnight.”
