Dramatic aerial pictures show scale of flooding caused by Storm Ciara as second weather warning issued

Aerial pictures show the scale of flooding in the rural Northumberland after a Sunderland family became trapped in deep floodwater on a country road.

When Storm Ciara brought heavy rain and flash flooding to the region on Sunday, February 9, one Sunderland family found themselves stranded on a country road near Bellingham, Hexham.

National Police Air Service were requested to assist Northumbria Police with the search and located a white Suzuki Splash, carrying four people, including an eight year old child, which had become trapped in substantial floodwater.

Thankfully following rescue efforts by the emergency services, all four family members were brought to safety.

Now aerial pictures taken in the police helicopter show the extent of the flooding in the area.

It comes as a Storm Dennis is expected to hit the UK on Saturday, February 15.

The public is being warned that some disruption to travel is likely. The weather warning is in place from 10am on Saturday, February 15, to just before midnight on Sunday, February 16.

There is heavy rain forecast for the North East from 6pm on Saturday until around 9am on Sunday morning.

There are numerous weather warnings in place across the UK including an amber weather warning for rain in parts of North Yorkshire and Lancashire.

The warning urges the public to be aware of some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport as well as the possibility of short term loss of power.
