The warning states: 'Southwesterly gales will continue to affect northern parts of the UK during Monday, strengthening further to bring locally severe gales by Monday night before easing on Tuesday morning. Gusts of 60 mph are likely quite widely, with up to 70 mph in more exposed spots.

'Much of Scotland is covered by an associated amber wind warning, where winds will be stronger still and there is a risk of higher levels of disruption.'

The chief forecaster says: 'A large, vigorous area of low pressure will pass just to the north of Scotland later on Monday and early Tuesday. This will bring a swathe of very strong west or southwesterly winds across much of the UK, especially northern areas. This warning has been further updated to include Cheshire, Shropshire and much of North Wales.
