The military object workshop will be held at the Coldstream Museum on October 22 between 10am and 3pm, led by Dr. David Caldwell, the workshop will also feature a weapons display by Dr John Sadler.

Throughout the Flodden 500 project, a host of volunteers from the local community have taken part in excavations, uncovering a range of historical objects from sites all around Flodden, and the battlefield.

A surprising array of weapons will be on display, ranging from cannonballs used at the battle of Flodden to small Roman finds that have been unearthed throughout the project.

Field walking has also played a major part in discovering objects, where volunteers have carefully walked transects through recently ploughed fields, searching for any objects of interest, meticulously locating and unearthing each and every one.

Dr David Caldwell, former Keeper of Archeology for the National Museums of Scotland and President of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, has published numerous works on Scottish weaponry and armory in the Medieval and Early Modern Period, and is now lending his expertise to the Flodden 1513 Ecomuseum project. Dr. John Sadler is a military historian who regularly offers battlefield tours, in addition to lecturing at the University of Sunderland Centre for Lifelong Learning.

“Our volunteers have made some amazing discoveries from the excavations, revealing some wonderful pieces from the battlefield site,” said Alistair Bowden, part of the Flodden 1513 Ecomuseum project.

“The workshops have proved very popular, and this the final one in this year’s programme, in particular will be of great interest, offering the chance to get up close and personal with real weaponry used at Flodden, along with some other pieces dating back much further.”

The Battle of Flodden marked a pivotal moment in the relationship between England and Scotland. Widely regarded as the last medieval battle fought on British soil, Flodden has given volunteers the chance to unearth excellent examples of English and Scottish weaponry used at a time when muskets were being introduced, with artillery being mixed with older, more traditional weaponry.
