The seal which was released back to the sea after being rescued.

The creature was dehydrated and underweight when it was discovered between Sugar Sands and Howdiemont Sands, near Longhoughton, on Monday. It was the second of two stricken seals to be helped on the beach that day, after British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) medics Jane Hardy and Jane Stephenson sprang into action.

Jane Hardy said: "They were both juvenile grey seals, born earlier this year and fending for themselves and fully weaned from mum.

"My friend messaged me with pictures of a seal he spotted while out walking. It was underweight, dehydrated and had a lump on its flipper and bleeding around its mouth. I collected it with Jane and we took it to Alnorthumbria Vets. Fluids and antibiotics were administered and it was relayed to Scotland for rehab. Once it’s a decent weight and treated for lungworm it’ll be released. It probably would’ve died without intervention.

"As I was lifting the first seal, I was alerted to another one further down the beach. It was slightly underweight and dehydrated, but not as poorly as the first one. I took it to the vets for fluids and then released it again."
