WATCH: Pilgrims make final leg of their journey to Holy Island on Good Friday

Christians from across the country arrived on their annual pilgrimage to Holy Island yesterday bathed in glorious sunshine

In stark contrast to last year, when the walk across the causeway was completed in driving rain, the pilgrims on the 41st Northern Cross march were greeted with an azure, cloudless sky.

Around 60 people from different denominations had set off from four places - Bellingham, Carlisle, Melrose and Dunbar - last Saturday, covering between 70 and 120 miles and each group carrying a large wooden cross to make their way to Lindisfarne, the co-called cradle of Christianity.

They stopped overnight at church or village halls, joining various acts of worship en route. The Northern Cross event has grown since a small band made the original journey from Penrith to Holy Island in 1976.
