The mother of England football star Lucy Bronze has explained why she thinks her daughter should be crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
The 24-year-old from Alnwick is one of 12 contenders in the mix for the prestigious award, which will be decided during the ceremony this evening.
In a video interview with the Gazette, Lucy’s mum Diane said her daughter’s 2015 has been indescribable and added that the Manchester City defender would be a worthy winner because she, along with her England colleagues, has moved women’s football forward in the last few months, following their historic exploits at the World Cup in the summer. Diane believes that interest in the women’s game has grown massively since the tournament in Canada.
During the World Cup, Berwick-born Lucy scored a screamer against Norway in the last 16, before heading in England’s second against Canada in the quarter-final. The Lionesses eventually finished third.
Despite her stunning 2015, Lucy has admitted that she did not expect to be nominated for the Sports Personality prize.
Tonight’s ceremony will be shown on BBC One from 6.50pm. People can vote for their winner by phone or online during the programme.
