WATCH: Live Second World War bomb exploded on Northumberland coast

The Howick Coastguard team was called out yesterday after a Second World War mortar bomb was found on a north Northumberland beach.

It was discovered in the dunes at Football Hole, near Low Newton-by-the-Sea. The Coastguard team liaised with police and returned this morning to meet the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, who detonated the device.

The piece of ordnance was found by Andy Craig, who described it as an unexploded two-inch mortar round (minus its fins) from the Second World War.

Members of the public are reminded that if they find any pyrotechnics or ordnance on the coast, they should not touch it. Ring 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
