A feast of twinkling lights, colourful displays and community spirit made Rothbury’s Christmas Tree Festival a resounding success.
Organised by All Saints’ Church and Rothbury WI the five-day event saw community groups, businesses and individuals decorate trees which went on display in the church.
In total, 56 trees were bedecked with differently-themed displays.
The festival was launched on Friday with a gala opening night and an array of prizes were handed out for the best decorated trees.
The overall best in show prize went to Rothbury Over 60s’ Club whose tree was decorated with some unusual items such as Steradent tubs and model buses.
In the junior section, first prize was given to Coquetdale Squirrel Group while Armstrong Hall Kids’ Club and Dr Thomlinson’s Middle School were highly commended. Wiggins of Rothbury took the local business prize with Tomlinson’s Cafe and Newcastle House Hotel highly commended and Northumberland Basketry Group took the voluntary organisation prize with Rothbury URC and The Royal Voluntary Service runners-up.
Santa also made an appearance on Saturday to take requests from youngsters and children’s craft workshops were on offer.
Evening concerts were also being held and all monies raised from the festival will be split between three charities – Rothbury and Coquetdale Youth Project. Angel Tree which provides Christmas gifts for prisoners’ children in the North East and Mary’s Meals, an international feeding programme for Africa.
