WATCH: Collie Kim delivers a surprise for Scott

A North Sunderland farmer and sheepdog breeder has spoken of his surprise after one of his dogs gave birth to a litter of eight, all-female border collie pups.

Scott Smith, whose family has been at the Village Farm since the 1870s, admitted he was shocked to discover that the new arrivals were all the same sex.

His dog Kim, who he bred himself, gave birth to the little bundles of joy on Tuesday. December 8.

The puppies’ father is Mik, who belongs to Paul Turnbull, of Debdon, near Rothbury, and it is his first litter.

Mik has been a stand-out performer on the Northumberland League Sheepdog Trials.

Scott, 78, who has been breeding puppies for more than a quarter of a century, said: “It is an interest of mine to breed collies.

“Regarding this particular litter, it is very unusual for that number of puppies to be all the same sex.

“It is the first time that I have had this number in the litter, when all eight are bitches.”

Six of the puppies have already got new homes, while the other two are still to find new homes.

It isn’t the first time that Scott – who also trials border collies – and his dogs have hit the headlines.

Towards the end of 2014, one of his dogs Jess gave birth to a litter of nine pups – five dogs and four bitches.

The pups’ father was Glen, who also belonged to Mr Turnbull.
