At 2.40pm today, UK Coastguard requested the launch of Seahouses inshore lifeboat to assist three persons cut off by the tide, well outside of the safe crossing times.

Local Coastguard shore-based teams were also mobilised from Seahouses and Holy Island.

On arrival of the inshore lifeboat, two men and a woman were brought ashore onto the mainland side by the lifeboat. There they were handed into the safe care of Seahouses Coastguard Team and arrangements were made for their vehicle to be recovered when the tide receded. None of the three required any medical assistance.

Seahouses Lifeboat operations manager Ian Clayton said: "It is disappointing that after all that has been done by the county and Holy Island Parish Councils and the local Coastguards to promote the safe use of the causeway that these incidents are still occurring. Sadly, if visitors to the area see fit to ignore the warning signs, it's difficult to know how to address that."
