After the business meeting, which consisted of notices from Cresswell House and a reminder about the annual trip in June to Kirkharle and Kielder, members heard about the success of the craft afternoon, which resulted in a number of knitted hats for the premature baby unit at the RVI.

The birthday flowers were won by Anne Grace, and the competition for a homemade toy animal was won by Jan Shotton, with Val West second and Linda Bell third.

Marion then welcomed Alex Lister, the reserve manager from Hauxley, to give an update on progress at the nature reserve and new visitor centre.

He gave an informative and often amusing account of the many construction problems encountered since work began in May 2015. He told us of the reasons for the delay in opening the reserve, but using projected photos, he illustrated what a wonderful resource we will soon have. He predicts an opening date in May, with an official opening on June 23.

Alex invited us to go on a visit. There were numerous questions from members and June gave a vote of thanks.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday, April 4, with a speaker about the history of forensic science and a competition for a decorated egg.
