President Serena Coulter welcomed members, two visitors and representatives of RNLI Amble to the September meeting. She appealed for donations for Christmas shoeboxes.

Fidget cuffs for dementia sufferers, made by members of the craft group, were handed over to Sue Swanson, from Amble.

Various events were publicised, including WI quiz heats (a team is needed) and Warkworth Memorial Hall coffee morning on October 7. The WI is running the raffle and prizes are needed.

Suggestions for the future programme were invited to be added to an ideas book.

Birthday flowers were won by Sheena Blackett and a raffle was held.

Using slides and film clips of real-life rescues, three crew members told us about our local lifeboat station in Amble. They informed us of the different types of lifeboats that are used for stations around the UK, both inshore and offshore.

The new Shannon lifeboat is particularly well-equipped to cope and can go a distance of 100 miles out to sea in the worst weather conditions.

Valerie West gave a heartfelt vote of thanks, and during the tea break a few members tried on some of the protective clothing worn by crew members.

A light supper was served comprising of fish pates and bread, with Pat Dodd’s fish-shaped biscuits and some cake. Members gave donations to the RNLI.

The competition for a piece of RNLI memorabilia was won by Pat Dodd.

The next meeting, on October 3, will be our guest evening with a pooled supper. A change in the programme means that our guest speaker will be Dr Ray Lowry on Laughter Is The Best Medicine.
