Marion stood in for president Serena and welcomed 37 members to the April meeting.
Signs of spring were evident with the creative entries for the competition, which was a flower arrangement in a teacup, providing a colourful and varied display, mostly comprising spring flowers. This competition was won by Jan Shotton and the birthday prize was given to Pat Wood.
The president’s notices included a tribute to Ethel Orde, a long-time member of the WI who had passed away just weeks before her 100th birthday.
The final destination for the July outing has not been agreed yet but members were reminded that there would be no evening meeting that day.
The committee recommended to members that in recognition of her hard work for the WI that president Serena should go to the Buckingham Palace Garden Party since she is standing down at the annual meeting.
Also standing down from the committee at this meeting is Diana Webber so any member interested in joining the committee is encouraged to come forward.
We are delighted to announce that at the annual meeting Sandra Kerr is coming along to sing her new song written especially to celebrate the centenary of the WI.
Kate has produced some WI bunting so this meeting will be something special - members are reminded to bring along an item for the pooled supper.
Because we found out quite late in the day that our arranged speaker on flower arranging wasn’t coming, we had to find a last minute replacement and how lucky this turned out to be.
We welcomed Graham Ambrose, a wood turning craftsman from Horncliffe, who provided us with a wonderful talk and demonstration of wood turning, producing two exquisite items that two lucky members won in the raffle. It was worth the subsequent vacuuming to have such a demonstration.
The next members’ meeting is the annual meeting on May 5, with a pooled supper and the competition is My Favourite Plate.
