Warkworth and District Probus Club held its monthly lunch meeting at the Sun Hotel on Thursday, June 16, and had as its guest speaker Diane Walker, who is a public relations representative for the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

With a combination of short videos and her own explanations, she took members through the extensive service provided to our region by the air ambulance.

The region covered is the whole of the North of England, including North Yorkshire, the North East, Cumbria and the Scottish Borders.

The charity owns three helicopters, of which two are always in service.

Flying from their bases at Langwathby near Penrith and Durham Tees Valley Airport, they are able to answer 999 calls passed to them extremely quickly, and aim to transfer casualties to the nearest A&E hospital within 15 minutes.

From 1991, when the first ideas were developed, until the present day, the charity has grown steadily and now requires approximately £4million to be raised each year.

The fact that a trauma team can be delivered to the scene of an incident so quickly has proved to be a life-saving service on many occasions since its inception.

The warm reception and many questions asked by members gave an indication of the high regard the public holds for this charity.

Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, July 21, when the club will welcome Mr Philip Deakin, who will talk about the castle, church and wild cattle at Chillingham.

We are always looking for new members.
