Parish councillors in Warkworth have agreed to invite members of Shilbottle, Loughoughton, Newton and Rennington parish councils to a meeting, along with David Francis of Northumberland Association of Local Councils, to discuss shared concerns about a swell of housing applications.
The parish council also agreed, by a vote of six in favour and three abstentions, that it could not financially support the protest group One Voice, Warkworth, which has been set up to fight ‘excessive’ housing applications in the village. The group made the financial request in principle, subject to requiring legal advice should a trio of applications by Northumberland Estates be passed.
But members of the parish council said they could not support this, as it would be setting a precedent.
l Work is set to take place to repair the gate on the eastern side of St Lawrence Church.
A stonemason, who had looked at the gate and pillars, had said that the structure was in a dangerous condition.
The clerk has contacted the church to request the access be temporarily closed.
A £625 plus VAT quote from the stonemason to reconstruct the pillar was agreed by the parish council. The clerk will try to find a blacksmith to carry out work on the hinges.
l The meeting heard that the pavements at Bridge Street and Castle Street were in no better condition. Coun Jeff Watson indicated that the Woodlands footpath had been included in the Local Transport Plan and it was expected that funds would be provided in the county-council budget.
l Coun Watson said that he had been approached by a resident regarding erosion of a least one metre at The Butts behind the floodwall. He had contacted the Environment Agency, but had not received a response to date.
l A community litter-pick is taking place on Saturday, March 21. The clerk has made arrangements to receive the litter-picking equipment and several volunteers have already come forward.
l The next meeting of the parish council is on Wednesday, March 4, in the British Legion Room of the Memorial Hall, Warkworth, at 7pm.
