War centenary weekend

East Chevington Parish Council and friends are holding a celebration weekend to commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War.

A bench, funded by the Army Cadets and designed by them in co-operation with Stephen Lunn, has been made by local blacksmiths and will be placed in Hadston Road.

The bench will be formally unveiled at about 11.20am on Sunday, November 11, after the service at the War Memorial. Refreshments will be served at the community centre afterwards.

The weekend’s programme will also see a showcase at Hebron Hall, Red Row, entitled Life As It Was, 1914-1918.

From 10am to noon, on Friday, November 9, pupils from Red Row First School and Broomhill First School will visit the exhibition. It will then be open from 12.30pm to 2pm to the general public to take a look down memory lane and chat about memories.

On Saturday, November 10, there will be a coffee morning with artefacts on display at the Church of Christ, North Broomhill, from 10am to noon, organised by partners Togston Parish Council for residents and friends.

Hadston House will be open from noon to 2pm for Remembering World War I, with coffee and a catch-up.

Between 4pm and 6pm, in Druridge Bay Community Centre, there will be a concert by New Voices Choir. Refreshments will be served, with a raffle for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. All welcome.

On Remembrance Sunday, at 9.15am, people can remember the fallen at the First World War graves at Chevington Cemetery and Red Row War Memorial at 10.45am.

There will be a service at St John the Divine at 10.15am.
