Cramlington-based Out of Sight has been named in the North East regional category of the Britain Has Spirit competition – with the chance to secure £25,000.

Through its own fund-raising activities, the charity has already raised half of its £40,000 target to buy the special caravan at Amble Links, but scooping the five-figure sum through the contest would be a welcome boost.

However, to be in with a chance of winning the cash, the charity needs the public to vote for the cause.

A spokeswoman for the charity said: “The project is to raise enough funds to purchase a wheelchair-accessible caravan, with wet room. Amble Links has been selected as it is the most suitable site for the children’s needs.

“The reasons are multiple – it is five-star accommodation, near to beaches, has a wonderful swimming pool with equipment for hoisting disabled children, it is near two major hospitals and is close to a beautiful coastline.

“Our caravan appeal has been called Chloe’s Den, after Chloe Gilbert, who found her angel wings aged only nine years. To be able to support disabled children and their families by offering free respite, in bespoke accommodation for their needs, is priceless.

“They will be able to focus on good things, make happy memories and not have to worry about where the money is coming from and allow parents to recharge their batteries.”

Out of Sight has been shortlisted in the North East region. There are 10 regions altogether. All regional winners receive £1,000 towards a street party. The regional winners go through to the next round and compete for national prizes of £25,000.

Voting closes on June 17 and you can vote each day. To vote for Out of Sight, visit www.britainhasspirit.com and find the North East category.
