How long does it take to plant 12,000 daffodil bulbs? Not as long as you think if 23 volunteers give a couple of hours each over three mornings.
The Beadnell in Bloom team may not have broken the world record for how long it took them to plant the 12,000 bulbs, but many hands really did make light work of the monumental task with a great show of community spirit, teamwork and sheer hard work.
It means that next spring, residents and visitors alike should watch out for a bulb bonanza all round the perimeter of the Bullring.
Beadnell in Bloom has always enjoyed an excellent relationship with local businesses and has had great support from the cake and produce stall. For this project, it was taken one step further with all of the bulbs being funded by local companies.
Beadnell in Bloom organiser, Katie Archer, said: “We are really grateful for the support of Coastal Retreats, The Craster Arms, Len Smith & Son Builders, Northumbria Coast & Cottages, Northumbrian Cottages, The Salt Water Café, Seabreeze shop and the new Seabreeze Café. Each business paid towards bulbs which means we have been able to do this high impact project in addition to the other gardening work in the village.
“The daffodil planting was also helped by the newly-formed Coast Care Project, based at the Seahouses Hub, which kindly loaned some trench spades to help us get all 12,000 bulbs in the ground. And finally, thanks must also go to the Seahouses Development Trust for the grant which allowed us to purchase some individual bulb planters which definitely made the job easier.”
