AN August downpour couldn’t stop residents from a north Northumberland village gathering to celebrate a new car park.

The first car park has opened at the Watson Memorial Hall in Lucker.

The chairman of Lucker with Adderstone Parish Council, Coun Lance Robson, officially opened the car park, thanking hall treasurer Liz Harrison for her sterling work in raising the funds for the project.

Funds came from local donations, the efforts of the Hall Management Committee and grants from the Northumberland Coast and Lowlands LEADER funding project, Northumberland County Council’s Community Chest scheme and the parish council.

The Watson Memorial Hall is a focal point for public and social occasions in Lucker and its surrounding area and the new car park has provided the icing on the cake to other improvements which have included the complete refurbishment last year of the hall’s kitchen.

The hall opened 75 years ago before cars were an issue and, with the hall having seen a growth in the number of events recently, it is hoped the new car park will ease the problem of parking in country lanes.
