Johnny Depp, Saint Cuthbert and even Superman were spotted in a north Northumberland village over the weekend – as Rennington came alive with its annual scarecrow festival.

Once again, creations were seen all around, whether it be in gardens, peering over the top of hedges, on the side of the road or even on a chimney.

And hundreds of people poured in to catch a glimpse.

Figures on display included Oompa-Loompas and Willy Wonka, Derek and Rodney Trotter and Puss in Boots from the Shrek films.

There was also a Tour de France scene, a Rennington’s Got Talent display and characters from Disney’s Lone Ranger, among many other eye-catching creations.

Crowds were down on the Saturday as the wet weather took its toll, but things picked up on Sunday and Monday as the sun came out.

Event organiser Anne Watson said: “We were happy with how it went. Saturday was a bit dull but Sunday and Monday were better and there was a nice steady flow of people.”

She added that the standard of scarecrows was once again high.

“There were a lot of new people in the village this year who took part and seemed to really enjoy themselves.”

The festival has raised around £5,000 for the upkeep of the village hall.

The Horseshoes Inn had a good weekend and remains open as usual.
