A football club is looking at increasing its security after vandals were caught lighting a fire at the ground.
The incident happened yesterday afternoon at St James’ Park – the home of grass-roots club Alnwick Town.
A message on the club’s official Twitter page read: ‘Young lads were caught at the bottom end of the ground, lighting a fire next to the perimeter fence.
‘They quickly left the area, but the police were called and did find those responsible.
‘The fire was put out before it spread any further.
‘We are not a playground, we are a football club run by volunteers.
‘Please do not damage our home. We have enough to do without fixing mindless vandalism.
‘We will be looking to increase security at the club as this is not an isolated incident and the police will be called to any future disturbances.’
The club has thanked Northumbria Police for its quick response.
