Police received a report at 5.22pm yesterday about the collision at Low Barton, a quarter-of-a-mile north of the Bridge of Aln crossroads, near to Whittingham.

It involved a Suzuki SX4 travelling north and an articulated lorry carrying large pieces of stone travelling south on the single carriageway.

The Suzuki, for reasons yet to be established, had travelled onto the southbound carriageway and collided with the front of the lorry.

The Suzuki came to rest facing south in the northbound carriageway and the lorry ended up partly entering an adjacent field.

The woman – who was the driver of the car – had to be cut free, before she was flown to hospital in Newcastle.

This afternoon, Northumbria Police said that she was in a critical but stable condition with life-threatening injuries. The lorry driver was uninjured.
