Police have completed their search for a man they believed had gone into a Northumberland river in the early hours of today.
At 2.22am, Northumbria Police officers out on patrol saw a man standing next to the bank of the River Wansbeck, at Whorral Bank in Morpeth.
They went to check on him to make sure he was OK but he had vanished. It is thought he may have gone into the river but, despite searching the area, they could not find him.
An extensive search of the river and the surrounding area was carried out in daylight hours but police found no trace of the man nor any signs of him having entered the water.
The search has now been stood down pending further information coming in to police. They thanked the public for their help.
The man was described as being aged in his 40s, with short hair and wearing dark clothing.
If anyone has any further information, they should contact police on 101 ext 69191.
