Bondgate Within is to remain open to traffic, but as work moves to Narrowgate, the road will be closed as gas mains are replaced in Alnwick.
Northern Gas Networks (NGN) last week started work to replace 250 metres of ageing metal gas mains in the two streets with more durable plastic pipes.
Work is currently underway on Bondgate Within, moving gradually towards Narrowgate. Both roads will remain fully open to motorists and pedestrians during this first phase of the work.
As work progresses onto Narrowgate in early February, it will be necessary to close the road to traffic and suspend all parking on Narrowgate for the remainder of the project.
Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times and shops and businesses will remain open for business as usual. Access onto Bondgate Within will be maintained throughout the project.
The work is scheduled for completion by the end of March.
Andrew Rodda, site manager, said: “This work is the final phase of a £330,000 gas mains replacement scheme in Alnwick town centre. The first phase commenced in Bondgate Within in March 2015 and was completed in June 2015.
“We have worked closely with Northumberland County Council and the Alnwick Chamber of Trade to carefully plan these essential works.
“Following concerns from local business owners over our original plans to close Bondgate Within, we have carefully revised our plans so this will no longer be necessary.
“The work has been scheduled for January as it is the quietest time of year and we will do all we can to complete the work as quickly as possible with minimum disruption.”
