The Bondgate Tower, in Alnwick, has closed for repairs to a gas leak.
The arch, between Bondgate Without and Bondgate Within, was closed this afternoon so Northern Gas Networks can repair emergency repairs in the area.
Emergency Response Engineers from Network are carrying work to a medium pressure gas main.
In order to carry out this repair safely and efficiently it has been necessary to temporarily close the road to through traffic.
Northumberland County Council warned that the tower ‘could be closed over the weekend’.
Denny Ingram, Network Officer, Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused while we carry out this essential work and reassure members of the public that we will be working throughout the Bank Holiday weekend to complete this work as quickly as possible.”
“If you smell gas you should call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999 immediately, your call will be answered at any time of day or night and an engineer will be sent out to assess the situation promptly.”
