UPDATE (5pm): Fire in Northumberland woodland

Firefighters continue to tackle a blaze in woodland near Rothbury which has been burning for more than six hours.

A spokesman for Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service told the Gazette that six appliances are currently tackling the fire, up from four around lunchtime. They are not aware of any buildings being at risk.

Firefighters are using two sets of breathing apparatus, hose reels, backpacks and beaters in their efforts to control the blaze.

At 1pm, the fire in the woods above the Hillside East area of the village was burning over approximately 75 metres by 35 metres of scrub and woodland and it continues to be contained within a similar area.
