UPDATE: 16-year-old boy dies after cliff fall on the Northumberland coast

A 16-year-old boy has died after reportedly falling from cliffs on the Northumberland coast during the night.

Northumbria Police were alerted at 3.06am after reports from the North East Ambulance Service that a person had fallen at Spittal Point, Berwick.

Emergency services attended and the teenager was recovered from the sea. He was taken to Wansbeck General Hospital where he later died.

A rescue operation had been launched earlier to search for the boy. The Coastguard at Berwick was paged at 2.30am and were joined by Berwick RNLI lifeboats, a Sea King helicopter from RAF Boulmer, the ambulance service, fire service and police.

The Berwick RNLI lifeboats were launched at 2.39am and 2.55am.

Northumbria Police enquires are in the early stages to establish the circumstances.
