UPDATE (1.30pm): A1 near Alnwick reopened after serious collision

The A1 north of Alnwick has now been reopened after around six hours following a serious collision this morning.

Motorists had previously been advised to avoid the area after a crash two miles north of Alnwick, between the Denwick and Charlton Mires junctions at around 7am.

Diversions are in place with northbound traffic taking the Denwick B1340 turn-off onto the old A1 and southbound motorists leaving the road at Charlton Mires onto the B6341 and onto the old A1.

The road is expected to be closed for several hours.

Police are in the area to help keep disruption to a minimum and motorists are thanked for their patience. Motorists are also advised to take extra care during adverse weather conditions. Speed should be moderated according to the conditions, and drivers should maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

The A1 north of Alnwick is still closed in both directions and is likely to remain closed for at least the next hour. No information has yet been released about any injuries sustained in the collision.

The road is now fully open. Motorists are thanked for their cooperation and patience.

• A man was treated for minor injuries in another collision on the A1 at Deanmoor, south of Alnwick, at around 7.15am.
