Seahouses inshore lifeboat and Seahouses and Holy Island Coastguard teams were called to the causeway at about 2pm, more than one-and-a-half hours after the safe crossing time.

A Seahouses RNLI spokesman said two people, both Portugese nationals, had made it to the refuge box on the causeway after their car had stalled.

The lifeboat crew took them ashore on the mainland and handed them into the care of Coastguard officers from Seahouses. Holy Island Coastguard officers were also in attendance on the Island side of the causeway.

Later this afternoon, at about 4.55pm, the driver of a Range Rover drove out onto the causeway to the stranded car.

The Coastguard followed the vehicle through the water and warned the driver.

Photographer Jane Coltman pictured the Range Rover as it drove through the sea, past the danger sign which warns drivers 'Do not proceed when water reaches causeway'.

Causeway safe crossing times today were between 0545 and 1225.
