Two rescued from car on Holy Island Causeway

Two people were rescued from the roof of their car on Holy Island Causeway on Sunday afternoon, outside the safe crossing times.

Humber Coastguard received a call at around 3.30pm on Sunday, which sparked the launch of the Seahouses inshore lifeboat and the Holy Island Coastguard Rescue Team. Police and the ambulance service were also called.

Two people were taken off from the roof of the vehicle by Seahouses RNLI and then passed into the care of Holy Island Coastguard rescue officers.

The safe crossing times on Sunday were from 8.40am to 2.05pm and then 9.10pm to 2.15am (Monday), plus there were spring tides over the weekend.

On the Holy Island Coastguard Rescue Team Facebook page, a man who appears to have been one of those rescued thanks the Coastguard for saving his and his wife's life on a post about the incident. The post has also sparked a number of comments criticising those who ignore the safe crossing times.
