Two people seriously injured in A1 crash near Alnwick

Two people were seriously injured in a crash on the A1 near Alnwick, after one of the cars was travelling on the wrong carriageway.

The incident, involving a Toyota Corolla and a Volkswagen Golf, happened at 6.06pm on Saturday, approximately one-and-a-half miles south of Alnwick.

The Toyota was travelling south on the northbound carriageway when it collided with a Volkswagen Golf travelling north.

The driver of the Toyota, a 76-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary, in Newcastle, for treatment where she remains in a critical condition.

The driver of the Golf, a 33-year-old man, also suffered serious injuries and was taken to the RVI, where his condition is described as stable.

Emergency services attended the scene and the road was closed for approximately four hours while the casualties were dealt with and the scene examined.

Police are appealing for witnesses. Anyone who was in the area and who may have witnessed the collision is asked to contact police.
