Two people have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after a fatal accident in Northumberland early this morning.

A 20-year-old driver was killed in the collision at around 1.13am when his vehicle overturned on the A69, one mile east of the Bridge End Roundabout at Hexham.

The two people arrested are a man aged 27 and a woman aged 21. They have both been detained in custody and are assisting police with their inquiries.

This afternoon, police made an appeal for witnesses. They now want to speak to anyone who may have seen a Vauxhall Astra and a Renault Clio car being driven around the A69 or Hexham town centre yesterday evening and in the early hours of Wednesday morning before the collision.

They want anyone who was in the area at the time and may have witnessed the incident or who has any information which could assist their investigation to contact them on 101 quoting reference 38 19/10/16.
