A NORTH Northumberland language school is about to launch Mandarin Chinese courses.
Dr Beata Kohlbek, of Union Language Centre in Seahouses, is expanding the business by adding a new language to its current offer of German, Polish and English courses.
Dr Kohlbek said: “Chinese is not only an exciting language to learn, but it is also the language of future opportunities for young people and businesses.
“In Northumberland, we have many Chinese residents and we can open up to them by learning a few phrases in their language.
“Chinese is a fantastic language, full of new sounds, completely unrelated to European languages and it opens up a highly interesting culture.”
Mandarin Chinese is the most widely-used language in the world, with more than a billion speakers.
Dr Kohlbek who teaches German, Polish and English, has been learning Mandarin from teacher Dan Wood.
Dan has lived in Berwick for more than two years but she comes from the city of Wuhan in China.
“It has always been my wish to teach, and now I can embrace the opportunity to teach others how to speak my first language,” she said.
“Chinese people are learning English in China, so it is great that English people are starting to learn Chinese, too.”
