It will be planted in the Dairy Grounds, down by the River Aln, in the shadow of Alnwick Castle.

Receiving the present, the Duke said: “I am thrilled with this Bhutan pine. I have seen it once or twice before and always wanted to grow it here.

“It is a great present. Thank you very much.”

Alnwick Garden director, Mark Brassell, was privileged to present the gift to the Duke.

He said: “We know it is a milestone year for you, so it is a great opportunity to thank you and wish you a happy birthday.

“It has been 20 years since the Duchess had the vision to create the Garden and we have been open for 15 years.

“During that time, six million people have been through here and tens of thousands have benefitted from our charitable projects, all of which would not have been possible without your support.”
