Coastguard rescue teams and paramedics were called out to two incidents after multiple people were stranded on the Holy Island causeway.

On Wednesday afternoon, April 9 the Berwick Coastguard Rescue Team responded to reports of two vehicles and four people who were stuck on the causeway.

Upon arrival, the team found all casualties safe but were immediately called to a second incident at Lindisfarne Castle where they cared for a casualty until a paramedic from the North East Ambulance Service arrived.

The team took to Facebook to say: “We were tasked yesterday afternoon for back to back callouts. Initially we responded to reports of 2 vehicles and 4 people stranded on Holy Island causeway.

“With the tide going out, we arrived on scene to find the casualties safe and well on the bridge by the refuse box. All casualties were safe and well, and in no need of further assistance from Coastguards. They were left in the care of Northumbria Police to arrange recovery of 1x vehicle, whilst we were immediately re-tasked onto the island to deal with a second incident.

“On arrival at Holy Island Castle, we assessed and cared for 1 casualty until the arrival of a Paramedic from North East Ambulance Service, who was transported to the Island by RNLI Seahouses All Weather Lifeboat.”

The Berwick Coastguard Team have now urged visitors to remain extra vigilant and check the crossing times, especially with good weather and the Easter break approaching. Information on crossing times can be found here: https://holyislandcrossingtimes.northumberland.gov.uk/
