Top tips on how to keep pets healthy this year

Veterinary bills are rising year after year, with the average costing more than £300, so keeping your pets healthy could save you lots of money.

Retail chain Pets Corner has drawn up a list of top tips for owners to help them make a new year resolution to ensure their pets lead healthier lifestyles in 2016.

Lucy Ross, its head of training, said: “It is important that pets are kept warm and sheltered from the cold during the winter.

“Furry friends that are housed outside will acclimatise during the colder months and build up a warm, thick coat.

Animals should not be brought inside for the night and put out again during the day as this may cause them to moult, causing them stress and making them vulnerable to the cold.

“Keep an eye on your pet’s diet.

“More than a third of pet owners use human food to treat their pets, without knowing that such foods can be too high in fat and potentially toxic.”
