Mike Telfer is building a new career for himself in the Parachute Regiment.
The 26-year-old, from Whittingham, won the Paras’ best recruit award after successfully completing the Combat Infantryman’s Course at the Infantry Training Centre in Catterick.
His platoon commander, Captain Sam Taylor, said: “He is a natural paratrooper, being intelligent, mature and well above the required standard. Even at this early stage of his career he shows strong leadership potential. He should be proud of what he has achieved.”
Private Telfer was in the building trade before joining the army. He had his own business for a time before the recession hit.
After driver training and a spell of leave, he will join his new unit, the 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment, in Colchester.
