Toolkit to inspire the engineers of tomorrow

The Alnwick Garden is supporting Tomorrow's Engineers Week by creating a special-edition toolkit for pupils to better understand the engineering behind the attraction.

The Garden is one of 13 tourist attractions in the UK supporting Tomorrow’s Engineers Week’s Mission Inspiration programme, which sees some of the UK’s favourite tourist attractions creating materials for visitors.

The toolkit developed by the attraction features fun questions designed to help visitors find out more about the attraction and its engineering, quotes from engineers working behind the scenes to bring things to life and a range of surprising engineering facts and figures, for example:

‘There are just over 120 jets in the upper basin of the cascade, which are controlled by a computerised programme. Each jet can spray water as high as six metres into the air’.

Tomorrow’s Engineers Week, led by EngineeringUK, is a national, industry-led campaign aimed at encouraging children to consider engineering as a career choice and to study STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects.

The toolkit is aimed at 11 to 14-year-olds.

Paul Jackson, chief executive of EngineeringUK, said: “The range of careers available in engineering is huge and having support from The Alnwick Garden helps us to highlight some of the exciting career options available to young people. This toolkit will allow young people to see for themselves some of the unusual real-life applications of engineering.”
