Well-used toilets at a popular visitor spot which were damaged by vandals have been reopened after a £12,000 refurbishment.
The facility at Warkworth beach car park was targeted last summer by mindless louts, who smashed urinals and hand basins in the men’s block and broke the toilet handle in the loo for the disabled.
It came on the back of destruction in the women’s toilet, forcing the closure of the entire Northumberland County Council-operated block.
While the disabled facility was reopened for general use in August, the male and female toilets remained closed.
But the block is now fully open, following funding from the county council, Warkworth Parish Council and money from Coun Jeff Watson’s members’ small schemes fund.
At the time of the damage, the toilets had been open 24-hours a day. They will now be open 9am to 5pm in the summer. Operating times for the winter are still to be decided. Police have vowed to carry out extra patrols at the site.
