All six performances of Sister Act, by Alnwick Stage Musical Society, have now sold out, quicker than any of the group's previous shows, with more than 1,500 tickets at the Playhouse being snapped up well in advance of the opening night on Wednesday (March 16).

It is further proof of the strength of local amateur dramatics in the town, coming a few days after the Duchess's Community High School also broke its ticket records with a production of Rock of Ages, which played to five packed houses.

The society is certainly raising its game with one of the biggest productions it has so far tackled as it celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. The show is loosely based on the hit 1992 movie of the same name and stepping into the role of Deloris, made famous in the film by Whoopi Goldberg, is local businesswoman and shop owner Leonie Dial.

The stage is set for a spectacular visual treat, judging by this time-lapse video of the scenery being built today.

Sister Act's director Michael Pearson said: "Naturally, we’re absolutely thrilled to have sold out the show but what has really astonished us is how quickly the tickets have been snapped up!

“Alnwick Stage Musical Society’s previous productions have always sold very well but we’ve never known the production to completely sell out before our opening night.

“The Friday night sold out a month before our opening night and I think that really spurred people on to buy their tickets quickly.

“Our show really is the hottest ticket in town and we have a hard act to follow in the equally successful sell-out of the high school’s production of Rock of Ages last week.

“So many people who regularly come see our productions have told us that they haven’t been able to get tickets, which means that we’re going to be welcoming some pretty new theatre-goers to the Playhouse and that is the ultimate aim of our community group.

“Alnwick is so privileged to have such a beautiful, thriving venue like the Alnwick Playhouse which accommodates a variety of local groups throughout the year and as many people as possible should support it.”

Sister Act: The Musical runs from Wednesday (March 16) to Sunday (March 20) at the Alnwick Playhouse. Check with the box-office on 01665 510 785 for return tickets.
