Prof Joy Palmer Cooper of Chatton, founder and chairman of international charity Project Sri Lanka, is to be the guest speaker at a public meeting at 7pm on Thursday, June 12, in the Cheviot Centre, Wooler.
The Rotary Club of Till & Glendale is raising money towards the building of a new school in Mapalagama, a remote small town in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka.
Mapalagama once had a thriving primary school, but, sadly, numbers dwindled because of its remoteness and the original building fell into disrepair and eventually collapsed.
In recent years, a committed new principal re-started a school in a nearby old building and successfully built up the number of pupils attending to around forty. This building was not fit for purpose and was furnished with dilapidated chairs and desks salvaged from another school that was closing.
