Tia takes tumbling title

Tia Barrett, 11, from Hipsburn, is Regional Tumbling Champion for the second year, having won the North of England Championships in Hartelpool last weekend.

This is another great achievement for Tia, a member of the Development Squad at Deerness Gymnastics Academy in Durham, who having won the National silver medal last July at National level 1, moved to a much higher tariff of difficulty at National Level 4 for this season and then suffered a double ankle fracture in training in October, ruling her out of action for several weeks and forcing her to withdraw from two important competitions.

Tia’s determination to regain her fitness and her love of the sport once again shone through and she was back to full training within five weeks.

The Regional Championships was a key milestone, as it was her first competition since injury, so winning the Regional title means so much to the youngster.

Tia now goes on to represent the North of England in the National Semi-Finals in Birmingham in May, where she will hope to show an even stronger performance with a chance to secure a place in the National Finals in Coventry in July.
