It was members’ evening with the First World War theme at the July meeting of Thropton WI.
We also had a speaker who told us of his father’s experiences.
Alan first showed us a spoon and other equipment with his father’s number on them. He trained men at Whitley Bay and met his future wife there.
Then he was sent out to the Gallipoli beach, and then to France. He was wounded and shipped to London, and later befriended German officers.
This was a commemoration, not a celebration.
The second part was a number of members reading out stories or poems on the theme.
These varied from more family stories to humorous poems and sad ones. Some very sad. There were also picture and articles to see from that time.
The last part of the evening was a pooled supper, and strawberries and cream. Some light relief after sad stories.
All enjoyed the feast.
There is no meeting in August, so our next one is Pressed with Alan Giles and old English on September 3.
