Thrashing out proposals for new play area

A fund-raising effort for a new play area in Belford has got off to a flying start, but there was some confusion among parish councillors about the plans.

At last Thursday’s meeting of Belford Parish Council, Coun Tracy Bell updated members on the scheme she is running to regenerate the Williams Way play area, which included the Bunting for Belford initiative.

On this, she said: “Visitors are commenting and asking what it’s for, so it’s having the right effect.”

So far, almost £2,500 has been banked, with more money to be counted, while Belford Community Group has donated £1,000, which has been used to buy four picnic tables.

Further fund-raising events are planned such as a family party in the park and a competition to name the new play area, which currently goes by a number of names.

But Coun Chris Rosby questioned the merits of replacing the ‘serviceable’ play equipment which is already there, saying he was under the impression that the plan was to install additional equipment in the grassed area.

Couns Bell and Rosby as well as the chairman and vice-chairman of the parish council are to meet at the play area to discuss it further.
