Kind-hearted shoppers have raised thousands of pounds for worthy causes.
Numerous charities and organisations have benefited from the Co-op Local Community Fund.
Every time Co-op members buy Co‑op branded products and services, part of their spend goes to specially-chosen local causes.
Those to benefit in north Northumberland included Alnwick-based dog-rescue charity SHAK, Longhoughton Community and Sports Centre Trust (LCSCT) and Amble Code Club.
SHAK and LCSCT were last year chosen by the Alnwick and Longhoughton Co-op stores to be award beneficiaries. Following this, £3,160 has been donated to SHAK, while £2,990 has gone to Longhoughton CSC Trust.
A SHAK spokesman said: “With 75 dogs at the sanctuary, many of whom have ongoing medication costs, every penny we receive is self-generated and this donation will help greatly with the ongoing running costs of the sanctuary and constant vet bills.”
Eleanor Phillips, chairman of trustees at LCSCT, said: “This donation will be spent for the benefit of the local community, starting with the purchase of picnic benches and outdoor seating for parents and their children when enjoying the community centre facilities.”
Meanwhile, £2,372 was raised for Amble Code Club, thanks to people’s generosity in the town.
Organiser Anna Williams said: “We are grateful to the fund and all Amble Co-op members who have helped us with this amazing donation.”
