James Bright and his cousin Michael Hall are now heading up the business at The Granby Inn and Restaurant.

And the pair have ambitious plans; to build on the venue’s previous successes and raise the bar even higher, with a particular focus on food.

James said: “We really think we can move the Granby to the next level. Michael won North East Chef of the Year at this year’s NECTA Awards and his food is a true testament to the chef he has become.

“It is every chef’s dream to own their own restaurant.

“Michael strives to source locally-produced ingredients. Our meat supplier is right next door to the pub – R Green and Son – and we have started to implement regular tasting menus which have been a huge success for us.

“We are excited to be entering the festive period with a delightful Christmas menu, which will be available from Sunday, November 27. Our New Year’s Eve menu is also booking up fast.

“We are a small local family-run pub and this year, we are celebrating 48 years in the trade.

“It is particularly special for us as we celebrate the next generation – the third – taking over the running of the business.”

Turning the clock back, James explains how the family has built up the pub’s reputation over the years.

He said: “Back in 1968, my grandparents Gilbert and Molly Hall took on the tenancy agreement from what was Bass Charrington back in the day.

“In 1978, they went on to win the AA Inn of The Year for the northern region.

“Anne Bright, along with her brother William, then took over the tenancy from Bass North East in 1987 and then the opportunity came to purchase the Granby Inn from the brewery in 1991.

“The purchase and management of the pub was then taken over by two of Molly and Gil’s children, my mother Anne Bright and my uncle William Hall.

“Then, earlier this month, myself and my cousin Michael, who is Bill’s son, took over.”
