A new service has been launched, offering people living with mild to moderate dementia a chance to enhance their thinking skills.

The year-long Living Well scheme is running weekly sessions in Alnwick, Berwick and Cramlington, where service users and their carers can take part in a range of activities that promote good physical health and mental wellbeing.

People will also be offered cognitive stimulation therapy, a discussion group session recommended for people with mild or moderate dementia.

The scheme is being run by the charity Royal Voluntary Service (RVS) and funded by the Ballinger Charitable Trust.

RVS is now looking for people to attend and is also appealing for volunteers to provide support at the sessions and help with transport.

Roz Tinlin, RVS operations manager, said: “This is set to be an amazing service and will make a real difference to the lives of people living with mild to moderate dementia and their carers in Northumberland. From our work within local communities, we know that services such as this have the potential to make a real difference to quality of life, but unfortunately they are not always readily available or easily accessible. Northumberland is a vast county with limited resources and we are delighted to offer this service to those in most need.”

Living Well sessions cost £10 per week (including refreshments and a light lunch) and are held on Wednesdays at The Alnwick Garden in the Stuart Halbert Elderberries Room. For details, contact Helen Staig on 07525 902269 or email [email protected]
