There’s nothing Daft about this

A VOLUNTEER group which provides a valuable service to cancer patients has been nominated for a prestigious award.

Daft as a Brush is the brainchild of Brian Burnie, a philanthropist who sold his home and business, Doxford Hall Hotel near Chathill, and put the money into setting-up a charity to provide a transport service to cancer patients.

And now his hard work and that of the team of volunteers, has been rewarded with a nomination for the Community Group accolade in this year’s Pride of Northumberland awards.

Brian, a self-made millionaire, who moved to Morpeth after selling the hotel, and now lives in Longframlington, has been involved with charity work for years but took the decision to sell up and downgrade after his wife Shirley had treatment for breast cancer.

While receiving treatment she had to travel to and from hospital, and Brian decided he wanted to help make this process a little but easier for people.

So, he came up with the idea of having bright minibuses, driven by volunteers, that would take people door to door.

Brian said: “It is wonderful. And it is all down to the team of dedicated volunteers.”

There are eight other categories in the awards listed on the form below.

Jeff Reid, Leader of Northumberland County Council, sponsors of the Community Group award, said: “We’re really proud to support these awards again because they do so much to help recognise local people who are involved in their community.

“These people are often unsung heroes but they play a big role in their communities, which is why it’s so important to celebrate their success.

“These awards epitomise everything thing that’s good about Northumberland as a place and show just how local people make the area so special.”
