Anyone in Seahouses on Saturday may have been rubbing their eyes in disbelief after spotting Chewbacca, Darth Vader or The Riddler wandering through the seaside village.
But they weren’t seeing things as more than 20 ‘costumers’ were at The Hub at the Sports and Community Centre to support a fund-raising activity for the Farne Churches Youth Worker project (FCYAFO).
Many travelled from Darlington and other parts of the North East and spent two nights at St Paul’s hostel.
There were all sorts of characters from Doctor Who to the Corpse Bride, from Captain Hook to a mermaid, a sizeable number of the Star Wars cast and hosts of other well-known aliens in support.
Quite a stir was made in the village, particularly when Darth Vader tried to board a Travelsure bus and also acquired a grapefruit at Seahouses Fruit and Vegetable shop (he was later seen holding the assistant by the throat, mercifully with no serious injuries).
Chewbacca tried to purchase a ticket for a boat trip to the Farne Islands, but was unsuccessful.
A large number of local youngsters attended the event and participated in a fancy-dress competition with three categories – under six, six to 10 and 11-plus.
Jade Park won the latter prize with Luke and Joe Fortune winning the middle age group. The under six champion was a boy dressed as a Transformer.
Around £800 was raised for the project, in large part thanks to a tremendous effort by a number of local volunteers of whom Sylvia Ward is foremost.
FCYAFO is very grateful to everyone for their tremendous effort and particularly to the costumers who came entirely at their own expense. It is hoped that a similar event will be held next year.
